The fragments of this first copy were found shapeless in the papers of JJ Rousseau, and offered in this state to the National Convention. At the end of the second volume, there are some fragments of morality, written in draft form, by the hand of J.-J. Rousseau. On the back of the last white sheet following the fifth part (volume II), we read these verses, written by Rousseau's hand:
“With Meillerie,
In a reduced desert,
Where once for Julie
Saint-Preux suffered so much,
The figure of the beautiful,
On the rocks traced
By a faithful lover,
Didn't fade away.
.......
.......
In this lonely place
He drives it one day.
Of such pure flame
These ancient monuments
Remind his soul
His first feelings.
